Vaal River Floods 2025

On 25 April 2025 the Vaal Dam reached a capacity of 118,48%. This resulted in the Department of Water Affairs to open 10 sluice gates. It is a really spectacular view to watch the water rushing through the sluice gates at the dam wall, but the results downstream are devastating and is causing severe flooding in certain areas along the Vaal River.

One of the areas hit most by this flooding is Three Rivers in Vereeniging. Yes, it is a very good name because two minor rivers are flowing into the mighty Vaal River. The Klipriver flows all the way from Johannesburg and finally merges with the Vaal River at the western side of Three Rivers and the Sugarbush River also merges with the Vaal River at the eastern side of Three Rivers.

The Klip River is pushing over the road at General Hertzog Road, near Euro Spar in Three Rivers. This forced the authorities to close the road on both sides.

Further downstream the Klip River also flows over the road at Golf Road and that also resulted in Golf Road being closed.

Here are some of the spectacular pictures taken of the flooded areas at Vosloo Park, Golf Road and Brandmuller Avenue on Friday, 2025-04-25 at 17h30.

As at 20h00 (8pm) SAST on 2025-04-25 the water levels were still rising next to Brandmuller Drive, Golf Road and General Hertzog Road. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes if driving out of Three Rivers in a western direction, such as the R54 bridge over the Klip River.
